About Us
AGTER ELKE MAN is quite a normal magazine.
AGTER ELKE MAN likes to mix English and Afrikaans in quite an unsettling way.
AGTER ELKE MAN is for gays, about gays, made by gays (this isn’t a rule though).
AGTER ELKE MAN is HUGELY inspired by the work of two crazy Dutch guys (thanks Gert and Jop).
AGTER ELKE MAN loves your six-pack, but also loves your big, hairy beer boep.
AGTER ELKE MAN knows you’re more interesting than you think.
AGTER ELKE MAN loves dirrrrty sexy stories.
AGTER ELKE MAN loves having a braai!
AGTER ELKE MAN thinks plain is great!
AGTER ELKE MAN can dance to hard house at 5 in the morning after drinking all night, but would prefer something happier.
AGTER ELKE MAN is daar nog ‘n man.
On a slightly drunken evening in 2008, Liam Mooney and Timothy Wang were complaining about how snore they thought the gay magazines in South Africa were. On a slightly more sober evening, they decided to stop complaining and publish their own. It would be inspired by a ground breaking Dutch moffie magazine called BUTT. It would also have to be inclusive (we love fats and fems!), but at the same time, exclusive (quality gays, quality production!). It would have to be funny, beautiful and thought provoking, with no socio-political agenda. And most importantly it would have to be real and fearless in its storytelling and production.
So for a month-and-a-half (their self imposed deadline) they set out at break neck speeds to make a entire magazine with the help of their friends. They paid for everything themselves, gave away free adverts and held a launch party in JHB and Cape Town. Magazines were sent to small stockists around the country…
…and so Agter Elke Man, ‘n gay magazine, was born.
It’s now a year later, and after great reviews and persistent requests from our friends, we’ve decided to launch issue 2. This time only better!
Agter Elke Man is a biannual (December – May, June – November), independently published magazine aimed towards the gay market. The magazine is entirely produced with contributions of writing and photography from some of South Africa’s most talented gay creatives. Our intention with the magazine is to offer gay South Africans a magazine that is representative of their real lifestyles, as opposed to the airbrushed reality that many other gay magazines create.
The style of the magazine is witty and satirical, whilst remaining informative – very much in line with international magazines such as ‘BUTT’ and ‘THEY SHOOT HOMOS DON’T THEY’. That being said, a strong South African spirit is still upheld through the use of both English and Afrikaans as the primary languages (“think 7de Laan”).
